Allowing players free movement over a map makes keeping STRICT TIME RECORDS practically impossible, especially with dynamic lighting. It’s easiest to do in “theater of the mind” style where the DM is effectively in control of the pace of the party.

Yes. When on a VTT, the best VTT DMs I know who like to use pretty maps use a "party token" - players only get their tokens in combats or when falling into traps - which either the caller controls or (as I'm going to try next time I run on VTT) the ref controls and responds to caller commands.

DeleteBeen thinking about this, and maybe a good way around it would be to have a DM side grid overlay on the map, but it would have to be at a high scale, like 10’ sq or higher, maybe even 60’ squares 😅
